Celebrate Kansas Voices: Amelia Earhart

image

Celebrate Kansas Voices is a site that does what it says, celebrate Kansas. There are many wonderful people, places, and events that have inhabited the state of Kansas. It is important for children and adults alike to grow and understand the history of the state that they live in. For my project I chose to make a video abimageout the first female pilot to fly across the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart. Amelia was from Atchison, Kansas and her memory still lives on there today. Using the iMovie application on the iPad I actually had a hard time getting the hang on the app at first. After playing around with it for a few hours I finally figured out how to use it. This project took a lot of planning to get just right and the voice over took even longer. I recorded my voice about 3 times and I still did not get it perfect at the end of the movie.

This project has helped me to realize that in the field of education planning is key. When planning to do an activity the teacher must know what they are going to do and the back up when things do not go as planned. Also I actually did not know that Amelia Earhart was from Kansas, so this project has taught me something new about Kansas altogether. This project was fun and interesting to do and a great end to the semester. Check out the Celebrate Kansas Voices site for more videos and information.

Application in the classroom: This app would be perfect in the classroom. Students need different ways of expressing the information that they know. If students are just given paper and pencil test to show thier knowledge base then they may become burnt out. When given the opportunity students will show what they know in many different ways. This app allows students to do so, with this app I would let the students tell stories of the information that they have learned on the classroom. I would let them use this app as a project to explain what they have learned in the lesson. This app is also great for teachers, it allows for them to have a slide show with a few pictures a bullet points and they can explain what is on the slides they have.

Reflection: I loved using this app. This app was creative and easy for me to use. With a few explanations and examples students all be able to use this app with no problem. This app is free which makes it an even better choice to use. Also I enjoyed how one can see the project that they have just made on the Internet as well. Using the iPad is not the only way to access the projects which can be extremely useful when the students go home and what to show thier parents what they have made without having to have an iPad.

Pros/Cons: There are many pros to this app such as the easy to use and all of the diffent ways one can make a project. I also think that the edit tool is super easy to use which can come I handy for the students. The only con that I could find of this app is the fact that one must sign in to create and view the projects. This is only a problem because students can easily forget the username and the password that they have created for the site. A way to combat that would be to create classroom friendly password that everyone would use with a different username.

Resources: Here is a look at the beautiful stories that can be told using the Adobe Slate app.

Here is a look at my story using the Adobe Slate application.

Using Apps in the Classroom, iTunes U Course

image

There are many educational applications that can be used to enhance the learning of students using an iPad or a regular computer. If the school has iPad’s, the Apple company has come up with an excellent resource to help teachers discover apps that they can use in the classroom for their students. The using apps in the classroom collection is a collection of apps that teachers can use in their classroom, when you look up the program on the iPad there are 18 different books to choose from and look through. While looking through the books there were 3 that I was really interested in.

image1. The first book I selected was titled Scoodle Jam (3.99). This app allows for students to explore different concepts using graphic organizers. This also a built in whiteboard, with this app students can even share what they are working on and work on the project together. This is a great app because it allows for the students to work together to create something great.

2. The nimageext book I explored was called Explain everything ( 2.99). This app is a screen-casting app that allows for students to record what they are doing. A lesson idea for this app was to have the students take a picture of the classroom and have a scavenger hunt with the picture.

image3. The last book I looked into was Puppet Pals ( there is a free version and a 3.99 version). This is a fun way for students to learn how to retell stories and other important information from class. Also puppets can be very therapeutic for some children in the class to express themselves. All students can use this app to learn how to express themselves as well.

How to get there. Here is an explanation on how to access these books from your iPad:

1. Click on the iTunes U app icon (Graduation Cap)

2. Scroll down to the for educators and click on it.

3. Scroll down until you see Using Apps in the Classroom. To see all of the books click SEE ALL.

4. Then you can select one to download.

5. Unlike the Lesson Ideas, which are located in the my courses section of iTunes U, to access the app books again you will need to go to the iBooks application on the home screen to view them.

The book I chose to look at was called Hopscotch. ( there is a free version and a 9.99 version). This app helps students to learn code and develop important computer science, problem solving, and logical thinking skills. The app has games that range from ages 5-14 and imagecome in a variety of subjects such as math, literacy, science, for ages 5-11. For ages 12-14 the list changes to include foreign language and geography. The book goes through the many different things that students can do in each category, for example in the math section for ages 5-11 they have given the lesson of having the students build their own house, which incorporates geometry. This is a fun way for students to learn about geometric shapes instead of them having to just listen to the teacher talk about them. For ages 12-14 the book gives the example of having the students design a vocabulary game for learning foreign language.

Learning a new language is easier the younger students are and by having them create their own games then they will be able to learn in a fun interactive way. What I really liked about this book is the fact that they gave sample lesson plans to go along with the app. This is excellent because sometimes it can be hard to know what to do and with a little guidance teachers can make a great lesson. I would use this app in my classroom because it is fun, interactive, and students would really enjoy getting to design different things. I would use this in my math classes the most, there were a lot of fun interactive ideas that I could use to really help my students learn. Over all this app will be very useful in the classroom and the book gave great examples as to how to use it.

Inspiring Ideas for Teachers, iTunes U Course

imageHaving an iPad can open up a new world of technology and resources for students and teachers. A unique concept that the Apple company has come up with is Inspiring Ideas for Teachers U Course. This is a collection of 30 courses that are teacher made that other teachers can use in their classroom. Each course has a certain amount of post in them that can be used as a lesson  in your classroom. These lessons can be a very important part of a first years teachers resources because they can give teachers ideas to use in their new classrooms. While looking through the courses there were a few that stuck out to me: ESL book Reports: This interested me because I do have a concentration in ESL and it would be cool to implement other ideas from teachers in my classroom, Of Mice and Men: I read this book when I was in high school and it was really good and with the right activities and instruction the new generations will be able to enjoy this book as well, and last The Civil Rights Act of 1964: This is important because we live in America and our students need to know the history of America also as a student of color myself I feel that it is important that others know the struggle minorities went through at this point in time. This lesson encourages lots of class discussion which is important for students to talk and get a feel for other ideas and opinions.

How to get there: Here is an explanation on how to access these courses from your iPad:

1. Click on the iTunes U app icon (Graduation cap)

2. Scroll down to the For Educators and click on it.

3. It is the first heading in the section and click SEE ALL to get to the complete list

4. From there choose which one you want to explore and subscribe.

5. To access it again you must go back into the iTunes U app and select MY COURSES at the bottom.

The course that I chose to review was Best Practice & Professional development: iPad Integration in Elementary Education and there are 40 post inside of this course. I chose this book because having technology in the classroom is important and can enhance the knowledge of students greatly. This course is basically a how to to iPad. It goes through how to set up your iPad, converting documents from all types of devices, apps for the iPad, and even included teaching resources at the end. After reading this course I learned how to convert files, file conversion can be difficult especially if you have two different devices, for example a Mac and a PDF, this course gave instructions on how to convert these things. Something I really enjoyed about this course was that it gave homework. It gave a check list of task that the user should complete when they are going through. I would use this course as a training tool for other teachers who are new to iPads. Using an in-service day to help teachers become familiar with an iPad can be extremely important. This course will let other learn how to navigate the iPad at their own speeds. I could also use a few aspects of the course to help my students who are new to an iPad become accentuated with it as well. An app that I discovered and really liked was called Idea flip. imageThis app allows for students to make flow charts, mind maps, concept maps and other organizational types of maps. This app could definitely be used to help students to brain storm ideas in any class, it is a free app as well. This course was full of very useful information that will help me to utilize iPads in my classroom to the fullest potential.

One Best Thing iBook: Student Authored Portfolios: Archiving Learning with iPads

image

Portfolios are an important tool within the realm of education. Portfolios can be used to assess a number of things about students and their learning. Using portfolios is an easy way to see if students are advancing in subject areas or if they are falling behind and needing extra help. The best thing ibook that I chose deals with the idea of digital portfolios. Traditionally portfolios are done in manila folders or a binder with paper stuffed into them, this method can be successful with lots of organization and making sure that the portfolio stays neat. The idea of a digital portfolio is that students get to create their portfolios using different apps, pictures, videos, and blogs to make their portfolios what they need to be. Digital portfolios can be very useful in the classroom and can enhance the technology skills of ever student in the classroom.

While reading this blog I learned a ton of information that could help me implement this into my future classroom. The sections that explain the rules of the blog were very insightful, she had rules such as the students can not post pictures of their faces, and everything must be approved by the teacher these few but necessary rules are for the protection of the student in the classroom, the internet can be a great creative place for the students but it can also be a dangerous place. Next section of the book speaks on which host to use for your students, I have used both of the options that she gave for using in the classroom. She gave edublog and kid blog as good examples to use in the classroom. The rest of the book speaks about what students can add to their portfolios and the ways that they can do it, it also gives explanations as to why those add ins are important to the portfolio style blogs.

This book has given me a lot to think about then deciding on how to use portfolios in the classroom. Reading this book has given me a real insight as to how to keep my students safe all while making sure that they are creating quality portfolios for the classroom. Another way I would use this information would be to send it out to parents so they know what is going on in the classroom, also so the parents are able to know what their students are doing in the classroom. This information will be useful in the classroom because students would be able to have a new way to use technology while creating a portfolio that they can continue to update for years to come. All in all this was a great read and I hope to incorporate the digital portfolio in my classroom one day.

Week 7 Blog Reflection: I Speak Math

988aa36570158a09a4735e06d9ed4b96

For this weeks blog reflection I was actually looking on another blog and found this one on the other blog. I Speak Math  is a blog about math and how she makes math fun for her students. I chose to read this blog because I am a person who is really bad at math and it is cool to see a teacher who is making math fun while also teaching important math concepts to the students. Also this blog is important to gain ideas as to how to make math fun in my future classroom as well and this blog could really help me see that teaching math can be fun for the teacher as well. This blog focuses on older students but most of these activities could be used in an elementary classroom as well. This blogger also teaches about how to incorporate technology into the math classroom. The particular blog post i chose to focus on was one involving rice krispy treats. For this activity the students were learning about probables and she as the teacher wanted the students to cut open a conic (which I assume is a cone) and actually see the parabola inside. This was a really clever idea because seeing something visually can help you to understand the concept better than just hearing someone speak about it. The students also had to create different geometric shapes that go along with Algebra 2 class. The students first had to complete the aimagessignment then they got to eat their treats. I also liked how she post pictures of her student and the projects that they are doing so others can see how well the project has worked out or not.

While looking at this blog i surprised about how organized it is and that she has lot of pictures of her students on there. Most blogs only have pictures of the project and not the students engaging in the actually projects. This is important because even though it is just a picture people can see if the students are interested in the activity or not when deciding weather or not to use the activity in their own classroom. I was also surprised by how much detail was put into the blog post. Most blogs only have a few sentences about the project and how it turned out for the students but this one has how they used the project, how it went, how much materials were needed, where to get the materials and many other important aspects of doing an activity. Also I liked how she posted the recipe that she used for the projeimageimage

Week 6 Blog Reflection: Teacher Quality and the Decline In Teachers of Color

image

For this weeks blog I chose to read a blog post by Jose Vilson. I chose to read his blog because it goes into another world of education that most people do not focus on. This blogger digs into the urban settings of education that deal with children of color and what happens to those children in the school system. I have been looking for a blog such as this to write on for a while and I am glad that I found one to write on for the weekly reflection. The article that I chose to read this week dealt with the quality of teachers and the decline in teachers of color. As a teacher of color myself it is hard to see the statistic presented in the article about teachers of color. The article talks about how when people start to discuss the quality of teachers they connect it with the conditions of the classroom, which in some situations may be true. The article goes on to talk about teachers of color. It says that teachers of color go into education to serve children of color, which in my case is sort of true. I would like to have stimageudents of color who see someone who looks like them being successful in other ways then dribbling a ball or rapping a lyric somewhere.

Reading this article was very eye opening and I will continue to work as a teacher of color to advance my classroom and the setting of my classroom to teach my students how to be accepting human beings and to make sure that my students are well rounded human beings. What surprised me about this article is that there was not more on the subject of teachers of color. There was a little information but I would have liked to see more information relevant to today. The article had a lot of good information but it mainly focused on the urban areas of education which are important but I would also like to know the statistic of teaches of color in middle class, or high end neighborhoods and how prevalent they are out there. Reading this article helped me to see that being a teacher of color will be hard but with quality education and the right attitude I can succeed.

Application in the classroom: This app is a wonderful app to have in the classroom. I would say this app would mainly be fore teachers. When a teacher needs to be gone from the classroom for a day and there is a lesson that only they can explain, this would be a great alternative to use instead of having a sub try and teach it. By pre-recording a lesson or task the students get the exactly what the teacher wanted them to learn and they get a visual example as well. This app would work wonders in a math classroom, the visuals that it can provided can really help students to see how something is done and it can be played back until they get it. Which brings me to my next point, teachers can use this to record examples of problems or activities that need to be done and post them online. This way the students can refer back to the content and continue to do so until they understand the content.

Reflection: I loved this app! It was easy to use, it had a variety of colors to make examples more vibrant, the recording process was super easy, and so was the saving process. Using this app was easier than I thought it was going to be. There were a few features that needed to be paid for but the free app is just as good. I also liked how you could turn the page and write something new of each page. Using this app will be great in the classroom for teachers and students. Also I like how this app can be accessed from a computer as well, it makes uploading the videos to YouTube and any other site easy to do, also the students can get on the website and access the videos themselves. Also with a sub it can be easy for them to find the video and play it with ease for the students.

Pros/Cons: There are many pros to this app such as how easy it is to use. It did not take any time for me to learn how to use this or to get the hang of recording this. It is good to make sure you know what you want to talk about. I also like how you can save your video as a draft and go back and add to it which is really convenient. Also how easy it is to add the videos to the web. A con would that there is a feature that lets you download it but it comes with the paid version which is 5.99. Even without the download it can be added to websites and blogs with the embed code. Another con is you do have to log in so that would have to be remembered when using this app for a substitute day.

Resources: Here is a tutorial link to how to use show me. Here is video with the app actually being used by students in a classroom.

Week 4 Blog Reflection: Teaching with Technology.

For this weeks blog reflection I read Teaching with TechnologybloggerI chose this blog because it says that they are a Virginia blogger and I am also from Virginia. I really liked this blog because it shows a lot of fun and interesting apps that can be used in the classroom. As someone who one day hope to teach technology in the schools it was cool to read this blog and see that those types of teacher are needed in the classroom. I think it is important to use technology in the classroom because students need to know how to navigate this world that keeps advancing every single day. When students are able to use technology they are able to open themselves up to a whole new world of education and teaching. The blog post that I focused on today involved students using a green screen to create a project based on a important figure, the students preformed their acts for parents at a PTA meeting. That is a awesome way for teachers to show parents what the students are learning in the classroom and to show other teachers what is going on in a different room. What I found cool about this that the students did most of the work themselves with teacher supervision. It is important for students to explore learning on their own and not with someone watching them all the time, with the students doing the work they will be able to make mistakes and learn from them to be better for next time.

When reading this article I was surprised that there was not more information on what the students had done for the project. I am glad that the blogger included examples of student projects to see how they did them. Also from what I saw the blog has not been update in a while and I would love to see what else she has done with the students at her school. Technology projects are cool and it would be great to see what I could use as a future teacher in my classroom. It is also nice to see that real teachers use edublog and blog about their classrooms and what happens in them, the information can really help first year teachers through the struggle of teaching for the first year. image

The app that was used to make the projects was called Do Ink. From looking at it in the app store it looks like a very fun app to play with and could be very useful in the classroom.

Application in the classroom: This app is an excellent app to have in the classroom, it could be used for so many lessons and projects in many different ways. This app is great to help the student express their creative side, creativity is a big part of learning and by being able to create something students have the opportunity to enhance their learning experience. Also when using this app students get to have fun filming, editing, and adding new elements to a movie that they created. I would use this app in all subjects  for my students because this is a fun way for my students to participate in the class. It is also a fun way to let the students teach the class as well, when students teach each other they learn better and pay will definitely pay more attention to the lesson being presented to them.

Reflection: I enjoyed using this app. It was very easy to use and would be great in a classroom ! liked how many option there were to choose from when making the movie trailer. Also I liked how everything was sort of pre-set for you to use that will be an excellent addition to using it in the classroom. Having things pre done for the classroom is a big help so that students do not have to take a long time picking a theme or the music for their projects. I even like how it is already set up in movie form so all the students have to do is add words and pictures to complete the trailer. Overall this app is fun, creativity, and interesting for students and the teacher to use in the classroom.

Pros/Cons: There are many pros for this app such as the easy to use programming, the pre made slides and easy ways to add in text and information. Also this is an easy way for students to be involved with the lesson. One con that’t not really a con is the ability to add music, yes adding your own music to the trailer would be fun but then again it does save time and teachers do not have to worry about students adding inappropriate music and showing the movie trailer in class or something.

Resources for this app: Here is a student made trailer using iMovie. Also here is a tutourial on how to use imovie

Here is my movie trailer! Check it out!
